For me, anything that is uncertain in a way triggers emotional feelings. I can name a few emotional things here; water, time, space, a line, a dot, a dream, a shadow, a memory, diaries, stains, foot prints… I draw wobbly lines that I have less control of. Continuous lines, oval shaped circles, weird looking forms too. They are some parts intentional and some parts just a move of my hand. I am interested in the talks that is not said rather than the ones that have managed to. The hole in the world of fully compact verbal and imagery informations. We live in a increasingly uncertain and complex world yet with a casual attitude towards objective facts. We talk so easy but often don’t know the truth if there even is one. When we think something is not true enough to be talked about we are lost, and don’t have a clue where to find it. In my paintings I stand by the fact that I am lost. I often draw a line without decision and draw over it or I erase it. The more I search for order and structure, I find holes and disconnection between spaces. The process of my paintings are continuous duel of ambivalence. Connection and disconnection, balance and lean, structure and chaos, continuity and temporality.. . Through the lines I draw, I search for sensitivity. The focus is on the lines that cross and tangle and stick out. an intimate way to bring out the inner world. Through the drawing books, it is possible to see the connection of my thoughts that continues to cycle and repeat. The time for drawing is somewhat distant from external stimuli encountered in daily life, and through the simplest and lightest drawing method, it is natural and free of distraction on the body and mind. +0000 jiyu kwak studio https://jiyukwak.com/Things-That-Grow-2017 Burg Zwei Galerie Solo Exhibition Things That Grow 2017 coming to here was a big change in my life, I had turn from my old problems and contacted new problems. For some reason-I suppose it was the lake— i started to go back to my old problems. The day i decided so surely that i would leave the old place. when i decided i wanted to make art. when i found out i loved making art. when i was born. When my parents was born and my grand parents. I always felt i have no roots. i flew or floated here. but once a taro lady told me that i do have roots. just weak, thats all. so i wanted to find it. i wanted to travel to find mine. it was different from just floating away. This is an on going journey. Garden of unknown, could it be the first step? i don’t know. branches grow that you can see. but the roots. will they grow too? i hope it isn’t too personal i mean. most of my work is about me. my life. but i do take double amount of time to figure out how to share it with you. like now i am writing this so you can read. maybe have a chat with me later, help me (you)find my (your)roots.
